How we started

Built the way clients actually wanted

Mews Construction was founded in 2016 by a team that had been working in New York City construction for years before going independent. The idea was straightforward: build a contractor that worked the way clients actually wanted — clear estimates, real timelines, direct communication, and work that holds up.

The Bronx is where we started and where most of our work still happens. We know what pre-war co-ops in Parkchester need versus what a two-family in Wakefield needs. We know how the DOB Bronx office processes permits and how long plan review takes when a job involves structural changes. That kind of knowledge does not come from reading a manual — it comes from doing the work here, consistently, for nearly a decade.

Since 2016, we have grown from small renovation jobs to managing full commercial build-outs and ground-up residential projects. We expanded into Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island as clients referred us and as our capacity grew. But the Bronx is still home — and it shows in our response times and our crew availability here.

How we work

A simple, six-step process

We keep our process simple because complicated contractor relationships are usually how projects go wrong.

01

You call or email us

We pick up or call back the same day. If you email, you hear from us within 24 hours. We ask basic questions: what borough, what type of work, rough size and timeline.

02

Site visit

We come to your property. We look at everything — not just what you want done, but what else might affect the project. Older buildings in NYC often have surprises behind walls. We would rather find them in person before we give you a number than discover them after demolition starts.

03

Written proposal

We send a detailed written proposal with a scope of work, itemized costs, timeline, and payment schedule. Nothing verbal, nothing vague. If you have questions about any line item, we explain it.

04

Permits

If your project requires DOB permits, we file them. You do not visit the borough office or navigate the online portal. We handle it and keep you updated on status.

Our standards

What we actually care about

We are not going to list words like “integrity” and “excellence” and leave it at that. Here is what we actually focus on:

Honest estimates

We do not low-ball to win the job and then hit you with change orders. Our first number is close to the final number. When it changes, there is a documented reason.

Direct communication

You deal with people who know the project. Not a call center, not a salesperson who hands you off. The person who walked your site is the person you can call when you have a question.

Permit compliance

We do not skip permits to save time. Unpermitted work creates problems when you sell, refinance, or renovate again. We do things by the book because it protects you long-term.

Realistic timelines

We tell you how long things actually take, including permit processing. If we say six weeks, we mean six weeks — not six weeks assuming everything goes perfectly.

Clean job sites

Construction is messy. We contain it. We protect floors, cover furniture, and clean up daily. Your home or business should not look like a disaster zone for the duration of the project.

Crew accountability

Everyone on our job sites is someone we know and have worked with. We do not subcontract to strangers. That matters for quality and for your security.

Licensing & insurance

By the book, on every project

Mews Construction Contractors is a fully licensed general contractor in New York City. All work is performed in compliance with NYC Building Code and NYC DOB requirements. We carry general liability insurance and workers compensation coverage on all projects.

If you are a co-op or condo board requiring specific insurance minimums or documentation before approving work, we are familiar with that process and will provide everything your building management needs.

Before any project starts, we can provide:

Local expertise

What 9 years of working in NYC has taught us

NYC construction has its own rules — literally and practically. A few things we have learned that matter to your project:

1. Pre-1978 buildings may contain asbestos or lead paint. Any demolition scope in older buildings requires a survey before we touch anything. We coordinate with licensed abatement contractors when needed.

2. NYC co-ops and condos require board approval before most renovation work begins. That process takes time, and skipping it creates liability for you, not us. We factor it into the schedule.

3. DOB permit processing times vary by borough, project type, and time of year. A bathroom renovation in a single-family home may permit in two weeks. A structural alteration in a multi-family building may take two months. We tell you which category your project falls into before you sign.

4. Landmark districts exist in many NYC neighborhoods and restrict exterior alterations. If your building or block is in a landmark district, we identify that upfront and tell you what is and is not possible without LPC approval.

5. NYC construction noise hours are 7am to 6pm on weekdays. We plan our schedules around this. We do not start early and hope neighbors do not complain.

★★★★★

4.8 stars · 51 verified Google reviews

That rating comes from clients who hired us for everything from a single bathroom to a full commercial build-out. We do not ask for reviews in exchange for discounts or any other incentive. Clients leave them because they had a good experience.

A few things that come up repeatedly in our reviews: we communicate well, we show up when we say we will, and the finished work looks the way it was supposed to look. That is the baseline we hold ourselves to on every project.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions about Mews Construction

We were founded in 2016. As of 2024, we have been operating in New York City for nearly nine years. All of that time has been in NYC — we have not worked in other markets. Every project on our record is a New York City project.

Yes. We are a licensed general contractor in New York City. We can provide our license number and documentation before any project begins. All work we perform is pulled under proper DOB permits where required.

Yes. We carry general liability insurance and workers compensation on all projects. If your building requires you to name them as an additional insured on the policy, we can accommodate that. We provide a certificate of insurance before work begins.

Both. Our residential work covers everything from single-room remodels to full home renovations. Our commercial work covers office fit-outs, retail spaces, restaurant construction, and ground-up commercial projects. We do not specialize in only one type — we have the crew and experience for both.

Call us at (718) 281-6000 or email Sajjawalbaig@gmail.com. Tell us your borough, address, what you need done, and a rough timeline. We will schedule a site visit, assess the project in person, and provide a written proposal. We do not give firm numbers over the phone without seeing the space.

Yes, regularly. We are familiar with co-op and condo board approval processes and provide all standard documentation — insurance certificates, scope letters, license numbers, and noise/work hour plans. If your board has specific requirements, let us know and we will address them.

Our own crew does the work. We use subcontractors for specific licensed trades — electrical, plumbing, gas — but we manage them directly and they are people we have worked with on multiple projects. We do not hire strangers or farm your job out to whoever is available.

All five NYC boroughs — the Bronx, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. We also take select projects in southern Westchester County. The Bronx is our home base and where we have the most availability.
